Those enterprising medical people have discovered a way to successfully transplant light sensitive retinal cells into mice.

To simplify the explanation of the procedure, they have developed photoreceptor cells that have been transplanted into the retina at the back of the eyes of mice and that have successfully integrated and not been being rejected.

Those blind mice have got their sight back!

Over the years many medical techniques that have become successful and commonplace have begun with experiments on rodents.

This new breakthrough is highly encouraging and lets keep our fingers crossed that it will soon lead to restoring the sight of those afflicted throughout the world.

It has been announced that the Macular Disease Society (MDS) in the UK has started a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of macular degeneration.
 

The disease causes a loss of central vision with over half a million Britons suffering from the condition.

MDS believe that few people are aware that this condition is the largest cause of registered sight loss in the UK – and there is no known cure!

 
Representatives from MDS are promoting vegetables and fruit that benefit the eyes at venues around the country.

Broccoli, tomatoes, oranges and lemons are amongst those that help to prevent the onset of the disease.

Exposing the eyes to strong sunlight without protection and not smoking can also help.
