Clinical Evidence
I have just heard about a clinical trial confirming that a Mediterranean style diet will help to prevent heart disease, certain types of cancer and promote the chances of a longer and more active life.
Over a period of four years a sample size of 770 people was divided into three groups. One group was given a low fat diet, the other two were put on a typical Mediterranean diet with one group given an additional one litre of virgin olive oil a week and the other an extra 30 grammes of nuts a day.
The two Mediterranean diet groups had significantly better results than the low fat diet group.
The typical Spanish Mediterranean diet consists of cereals, fresh fruit, legumes and whole grains, fish and olive oil, has long been associated with a healthy lifestyle and the trial confirms this to be true. The addition of extra olive oil and nuts, walnuts are mentioned, adds strength to the diet in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes.
